i just managed to spray myself in the face with an open coke can. Welcome to monday.
How so? Well I didn’t realize my mouse cord was behind my coke can and when I went to pull out the lower portion of my desk to set my laptop on, the mouse cord got yanked and it propelled the coke can right at me. Thankfully it was only about half full or i’d be changing clothes right about now.
Let’s talk about sewing first today. First up, I didn’t get a lot done on Rebels Leia last week. I dug around looking for scrap spandex I could use for a mock-up but didn’t find much. To be fair It’s been a while since I’ve done much with spandex.
So I decided Saturday morning I’d go to Joann and see if I could find some clearance stretch fabric to mess with.
Well I didn’t find any clearance spandex, but I did find…
Some different fabric to use for the pants/blue parts — the fabric at the top of the picture. The fabric in the bottom portion is the neoprene i picked up in NYC. I didn’t love the colour of it but I liked the thickness. The stuff I found at Joann isn’t near as thick but it’s thicker than your average spandex or slinky knit. And I like the colour WAY more, it’s basically exactly what I wanted. So I got some yardage of that and that’s now what I’m going to use.
I did find some clearance fabric to use for my Nadja mock-up though so it was all together a successful Joann trip.
Sunday I decided to finish up the last few little things on my Star Trek uniform. First up was just cleaning up the inside of the bra where I’d installed the new cups, so got that on and then wanted to try it all on to see how it was looking.
I picked up some tights to wear with it at Target saturday, which I ended up being disappointed with. They’re a great colour and not control top — but the upper “bikini” area turns a much darker brown, and it shows under the edges of my yellow bikini bottoms and it makes it look like I’ve got darker underwear on underneath it that’s showing. Don’t like that. Plus they feel really cheap like my nails are just going to tear right through them, so I caved and got online and ordered some capezio tights in java.
So anyway, got it all on and…
Ok so this photo was actually later in the day, because when I first put it all on, I realized my sleeves were too big and the shoulder seam was sitting too low. IT made the whole shoulder/upper chest area look weird and baggy.
So — I threw a hoodie on over everything else, sat and removed the sleeves, trimmed down the sleeve openings on the dress, took up the sleeves and put it all back together. I’m glad I took the time to do it because it looked a LOT better.
The only other thing I noticed was that my hem was a little wonky in places. Mom came over and pinned it for me before NYC. I had to cut quite a bit off so likely when I went to repin something got off. I’ve taken out the hem – need to press back out, and repin and restitch.
It’s so hard to get it right because it hangs differently on the form than it does on me. I may have to teach Chase how to pin a hem tonight.
Anyway that’s what I ended up doing most of Sunday. I’m hoping to have it 100% done tomorrow and hung up ready for huntsville and i can fully move on to Rebels Leia.
I did order some fabric for Rebels Leia’s top last week — but annoyingiy it’s just been stuck in “label created” on USPS for 5 days now. I feel a little stuck without it because I want to see it with my other fabrics before I really get started.
I also keep waffling on Rebels Leia. Just like I did with wedding Leia which is part of what made it take so long. Do I want to do the sleeve built into the top with no shoulder seam? Or do I want separate sleeves? I’m thinking separate sleeves but the little bit of monkeying I did with scrap fabric last week I could not decide and ended up wasting the little bit of spandex I did find.
Then do I want to do the blue part of the shirt as a patterned, pieced in section or the shirt? Or do I want to just create the panel and sew it on top of the shirt? Or underneath? Ugh. I’m not usually so indecisive about these things.
I AM making the costume as 2 pieces -shirt and pants. I know the thing should be a 1 piece bodysuit but for comfort — and to make sure the pants fit well — I’m doing 2 pieces. Anytime I had to make a bodysuit in the past it seemed like the pants never fit well. Trying to avoid “crazy crotch” as Michael Kors would say.
So what else happened this week..
Oh there was an IG story prompt of posting yourself at 19. I realized I don’t have anything I know for sure is 19… so I went digging. At first I was like, oh my Quistis costume was 1999 so that was 19, so I started to pull up that pic I always use when wanting to post my oldest costume pic – the pic of me, Cath and our high school friend in front of my parent’s fireplace Halloween night that year.
I always feel bad using that pic on social media because I’m pretty sure that high school friend does not want to be on my social media. I always try to cover their faces but it’s awkward. So I pulled out my old physical photo albums to see if I could find something that was me at 19 for sure. And while I didn’t find that, I DID find..
A standalone picture of JUST ME from that Halloween night! Why have I never had a scan of this? I forgot it existed. So I got it scanned and now I can use this for social media posts instead of awkwardly hiding friends’ faces.
Thursday Chase had a photoshoot and he had me tag along to play assistant. I got paid in cheese dip.
Friday it was bad weather again. They had us in a risk category “5” which we haven’t been in in over a decade from what I understand. I cleaned out the storm closet and got it ready. Chase left work early and we sat and watched the storm coverage as it moved towards us.
We ended up not even having rain. It was windy but that was it.
Saturday night I went to see Ink (the play my cousin is currently in) with Nana, Kristie and Ash. Chase and dad were seeing Journey and Toto lol. It was really good.
So upcoming… hopefully finish the skant in the next day or so. Make decisions on Rebels Leia. Hope my fabric shows up. I can at least go ahead and make pants. Maybe go to goodwill this weekend and see if I can find boots.
